Angry old men! Only 'pure bloods' need apply!

Extracts from old aacultwatch forum:

I assume you mean the meetings where anyone with a drug history is told to leave?  There are a couple of groups that act like that in my area but they don't call themselves "Primary Purpose Groups" as a separate designation.  Is that catching on as a special designation of meeting? If so that could cause AA's reputation to suffer IMO, especially now that the internet gives anyone with a computer a voice.  Some of the hatefulness I have seen at meetings crazy with the "primary purpose" would be enough to make me have never stayed in the fellowship if I hadn't been to some very good meetings before I encountered it.

The groups who are extremely strict about the primary purpose always make me uncomfortable, and I am a plain old drunk!  They seem to be more controlling than friendly and in the few groups I am familiar with there are presiding old timers who absolutely rule the roost from their imaginary throne, and everything that goes on in the meeting must be to suit them (sponsorship, meeting shares, the coffee had better be the way they like it too) or the offending person gets slammed.  I have had friends stop attending one of these meetings because they started asking people as they entered the room if they were a real alcoholic or not, then determined if they could stay or go.

I recall seeing an entire treatment center group kicked out of another meeting when I had a couple of years sober, just because one poor girl called herself an addict.  Poor thing probably hadn't detoxed enough to even know what planet she was on at that point, let alone if drinking had been a problem along with the drugs. They told her she had to leave immediately and that meant the rest had to go as well. It was one of the nastiest situations I have witnessed. That particular meeting called themselves the "Original Group" and would tell everyone they were the only real AA meeting in town and you couldn't have real sobriety without being a member.  I have never seen an angrier collection of old coots in my life. Guys locked up for life in prison couldn't be any meaner or angrier than those guys. Fortunately even back then that meeting kind of became a joke and no one went but those hateful old men after a while.  It may have died off by now.”

That's as good a description as I've seen, but Yes there is actually an organisation within AA calling itself Primary Purpose.

It was spawned by the Dallas PPG (Cliff B), which 'sponsors' groups all over the world, publishes it's own wtf, disparages the rest of AA, runs under oblique 'steering commitees' and is involved in the speaker circuit which gets talked about on here.

Some lovely members in these groups, but run by very angry men in my experience, who tend to be expert on the line by line reading of the book, but short on emotional change.  Don't take much, if anything to do with 'mainstream' AA.

They'll argue the toss about anything and are always right. You know the type (ie most of us before we got sober!:).”

Wow, so they are literally trying to create their own "special" AA officially?  Remarkable!  That takes a lot of fear!  Most of us have too much to do in daily life to carry a resentment that far.  I would imagine the guys in charge of this would have to be quite angry.  Circuit speaker worship has been a concern of mine for some time, I have seen people get very nasty (or just drunk) after attending special "workshops" that tell you the "real way" to read the Big Book (sorry, I learned to read in first grade, need to move on).

Thanks for the information, I will need to look into this.  It doesn't sound very healthy and if any of these meetings come here I will want to avoid them.  My husband is very much a student of AA History and this will be of intense interest to him as well.”

Cheers

“Unnatural links”

From time to time we receive some rather unusual emails (and requests) some of which we publish and some of which are quite frankly unprintable.

Recently we were mailed by a chap called Peter who works (as we later confirmed) for an outfit called Tasty Placement which as you will see deals with all things web based (search engine optimisation, web design blah di blah di blah …). It would seem that Tasty Placement has as a client another outfit named Origins Recovery Centers (based in the US) which is part of the multi-billion dollar (yes that's right... multi BILLION dollar) rehab industry.

According to Origins blurb:

Origins Recovery Centers provides integrated inpatient treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. At Origins, clients receive expert medical, clinical and spiritual care individually designed for their needs. Our Clients leave Origins with the foundation upon which they will build the rest of their lives. Origins – Delivering Real Solutions for Real Families. Call Now to speak with an Admissions Specialist”

We love that bit about “Real Solutions for Real Families”. But what about all those people who come presumably from 'unreal' families. Sounds like a clear case of discrimination to us! But what the hell! If it's sounds snappy does it really matter if it's meaningless!

Origins Recovery Centre presents a fairly slick (and comprehensive) sales pitch as you would expect from an enterprise which “provides the most preeminent aftercare and relapse prevention program available in the United States” (incidentally “pre-eminent means 'most outstanding”. They must be really good. They're most MOST outstanding!).

Strangely they seem remarkably coy about what they charge for all this stuff. But fortunately 'most' (there's that word again!) health insurance cover is accepted. Phew! What a relief!

However knocked out as we are by all the razzmatazz what is of rather more interest from our point of view at least are a couple of names which pop up under their Staff List, viz. Chris Raymer and Myers Raymer.

Now for those of you who aren't in the know (Where've you been? Mars!) we suggest you check the following out (See here). You will note that apart from working for the “ most preeminent aftercare and relapse prevention program available in the United States” they also have a nice little gig going with the Dallas Primary Purpose gang as well as running a rather expensive (Big) book bindery service. This is a busy pair indeed … which brings us back to Peter's email to us!

Firstly:

Hello,

It has come to our attention that a number of links exist on your domain that lead to our website http://www.originsrecovery.com/. We recently received a notification that Google has detected a pattern of unnatural links on our site, so we are currently trying to remove or “no follow” links pointing to us in order to resolve this issue.

We ask that you please remove or “no follow” all existing links to http://www.originsrecovery.com/ from your domain, including, but not limited to:

Once all the links have been removed, please notify us as soon as possible.

We understand it is an inconvenience, but if we are unable to remove these links, we are instructed to use Google’s disavow tool to devalue them. This in turn could result in Google deindexing your domain. We have no intention of hurting your domain, so it would be very much appreciated if we could work together to resolve this.

Thank you for your cooperation and feel free to contact us if you have any questions regarding the process.

Best,
Peter”

This communication was shortly followed by a second email:

Hello,

It has come to our attention that a number of links exist on your domain that lead to our website http://www.originsrecovery.com/. We recently received a notification that Google has detected a pattern of unnatural links on our site, so we are currently trying to remove or “no follow” links pointing to us in order to resolve this issue.

Now what this all boils down to is what search engines are showing up when people plug in search terms like “Origins Recovery Centers” or “Myers Raymer” or “Chris Raymer” or “Joe and Charlie” or “Primary Purpose” (in various combinations). What they also frequently get is a listing for a website named “aacultwatch”. Now people being people, and naturally curious, they're going to find it almost irresistible to take a gander at what this strange outfit is all about. And of course they'll discover stuff about Chris Raymer and Myers Raymer that they wouldn't otherwise know, and moreover (quite understandably) what Origins Recovery Centers would rather not have advertised! Of course there's nothing “unnatural” or indeed accidental about these links. They are placed on our site quite deliberately. But we thought we'd check it out anyway. So taking up Peter's polite invitation to contact him if we had any questions we did precisely that:

Dear [Peter],

Thank you for your mail.  If you would kind enough to forward the notification you received from Google we will look into the question and get some clarification from them. We will then contact you”

We received – no reply! Suspecting that Peter was perhaps not quite as sincere as he would have us believe (and allowing sufficient time for a response) we then sent the following email:

"Dear [Peter],

We refer you to our previous reply. If you are unable or unwilling to supply this information then we will be obliged to decline your request(s). Moreover we note that the links you indicate below include a "search" function which point to material completely unrelated to your stated client's site.  Accordingly we are rapidly coming to the view that your objections are not so much based upon a (as yet unsubstantiated) notification from Google in relation to "unnatural links" but rather an attempt on you and your client(s) part to suppress information associated with their activities.

Finally we do not respond particularly well to threats (implied or otherwise). Our usual response is to publicise such attempts prominently on our site”

Et voilà!

Cheers

The Big Book Study Movement

Final Report: Leinster (Eire) Intergroup Sub-Committee (September 2008)

Source: Alcoholics Anonymous General Service Conference of Ireland
Alcoholics Anonymous News Sheet – update – Dec 2008/Jan 2009

Extracts:

No group or individual should deem themselves an authority on how to interpret the Big Book on behalf of others. The steps are suggested and experienced sponsors are wise enough not to give newcomers hard and fast directives. There are no authorities in AA and even self-appointed teachers have “feet of clay”.

Our knowledge of recovery has been received in the Fellowship through the experience of one Alcoholic sharing with another Alcoholic and it was not received on an instructive basis or in a classroom atmosphere”.

Many times we have heard an argument supported with one part of a tradition whilst the second part is completely ignored. This phenomenon seems to occur, quite often, in Tradition 4. “Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or AA as a whole. Autonomy seems to be used as an argument, to explain or defend, why a group ought to do what a certain member wants it to do”.

Sponsorship

In AA sponsor and sponsored meet as equals, just as Bill and Dr Bob did”.

The Internet and Website

Conference, (a collective Group Conscience of all the Groups in Ireland, both North and South) requested that there be only one website for Alcoholics Anonymous in Ireland and that the Groups, if they chose, would list the times, dates and places of meetings, as in the Directory, without the contact names and phone numbers, in the interest of unity. Conference felt that if Groups started to host their own websites [eg. The Road to Recovery (cult) group Plymouth], it might create competition between them and would dilute the very purpose of what was intended, which is simply to inform the public and their members, of where and when meeting [sic] are held”.

And finally:

Tradition 5 …..The unique ability of each AA to to identify himself with and bring recovery to the newcomer in no way depends upon his learning, eloquence or any special individual skills”.

(our emphases – in bold print)

Comment: As we've said before (see The Big Book Study Movement is outside of the Structure of Alcoholics Anonymous In Ireland) the General Service Conference of Ireland seems to be light years ahead of its GB equivalent. They have identified the problem, discussed it and evolved a clear strategy to deal with the issues raised. What a contrast they are with Great Britain's service structure which seems barely able to acknowledge that a problem exists at all let alone begin to respond to it! Ostrich-like they bury their heads in the sand in the hope that these dogmatists will just go away (see Minority Report 2013 and Primary Purpose/Back to Basics). We repeat our previous question to our “trusted servants” (??): Precisely how many newcomers have to suffer and die before clear action is taken to exclude these meetings (Primary Purpose, Back to Basics, Visions) from our fellowship? How long are AA members going to continue to inflate the egos (and the pocket books) of the sundry circuit speakers, Big Book 'experts' and other parasites by subscribing to their so-called 'workshops' and assorted 'study guides' together with all the other accessory junk they produce? In fact just when is “I AM RESPONSIBLE” going to be something more than a mere form of words to be mouthed meaninglessly at AA meetings?

Over to you

Great Britain to follow Soon???

Well,…er…maybe, if they can stop twanging their guitars, smooching across the dance floor, hugging, kissing, chanting ‘The Promises” and singing ‘Amazing Disgrace’* at the Southern National Convention, this too might come to pass!

So, if our trusty servants can’t think, or lead, why don’t we all just ask them to act like sheep and follow the leaders?…

Ireland’s jumped right off the fence onto Concept IX!

Breaking news! Share magazine actually prints something worth reading!

Yes. It's true! We cannot tell a lie. But you could have knocked us over with a feather! Now we must confess we'd hardly describe ourselves as habitual readers of this production. Indeed the only time we have recourse to this particular journal is if we're suffering from an unusually bad case of insomnia. Experience has taught us that merely to peruse this journal for a matter of moments induces a kind of coma, an effect that could not be equalled by even the most powerful of chemical soporifics. Indeed so bland generally are its contents that even the most dedicated and enthusiastic of its readers could not possibly remain awake beyond the five minute mark! A major contributor to this effect is the many articles emanating from Plymouth. Indeed large parts of the magazine are frequently devoted to outpourings from this cult group, (Road to Recovery) whose offerings consist mainly of the usual homilies to their GOD the SPONSOR”; he or she who MUST BE OBEYED. So repetitious is this mantra that a kind of drowsiness descends upon those so exposed, an effect we can only attribute to the sheer mind-numbing tedium induced by its constant recitation. Occasionally this narcoleptic tendency can partly be offset by recourse to the regular ravings of Dennis from Ealing (yet another sponsee of David “The Icon” C) who seems to have been well and truly “rocketed” - although no one is entirely sure where! So you can imagine our … well shock and awe … upon reading this next contribution:

IN RESPONSE TO HARRY A

I would like to reply to the article from Harry A, 'Be clever enough to be stupid' (September 2012 Share). I found it very thought-provoking. Firstly I was wondering how he managed 25 years in AA before 'Big Book thumper' 'in Dallas, Texas, [Primary Purpose cult] his words, not mine, entered his life. A man armed with the facts? Wasn't anyone armed with the facts before then?

I found it very insulting too (do I say it? Yes, I will), to mainstream AA. All these so-called special and different AA types that only have 'Rolls-Royce' sponsors, in my humble opinion, are run on ego and are bullies hiding under the cloak of AA.

These men 'armed with facts' intimidate vulnerable, sick people and continue to tell AA members to come off their medication. This is not the AA I was brought up with and love. My sponsor walks beside me, suggests and doesn't bully and has taken me through the Steps from the Big Book.

These men 'armed with facts' should remember Tradition One: 'Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends on AA unity.' Bill W said AA will fall apart from within. I pray that this will not happen, but if certain behaviour from certain groups continues, Bill W's word will become a reality. I don't want this to happen because if AA dies I will surely die too. What is the solution?

........ (14 years sober)”

Well after picking ourselves off the floor we continued to stare at the letter in shocked disbelief. How on earth .. we asked ourselves.. had a piece of genuine honesty found its way into the pages of Share? This must be a misprint! We could only conclude the editor must be on holiday and that one of his/her mischievous minions had slipped this by under the Share radar. The editing process usually ensures that only the most 'politically correct' pieces find their way into these hallowed pages (?). Oh surely there will be hell to pay when the “cat” returns to find this particular mouse at play! Hardly daring to tear our eyes away from this missive with trembling hands we carefully applied the scissors and subtracted the section from the remainder of the page. One of the office juniors was despatched post haste to acquire the most expensive picture frame he could find and in no time at all it was suspended in all its glory, adorned in gold upon the office wall. Silently we gazed with adoration at its syllabic magnificence. Indeed so striking was its effect it might only be compared to the Second Coming! Even now as these words are being typed we glance upwards from time to time to take inspiration and comfort from one who has dared to speak the truth! Long may they live and prosper!

First the 12 Steps – then the 6 Suggestions – now the 7 Questions....

What next! First we had the 12 Steps …. then the 6 Suggestions (c/o the cult) ...... now the 7 Questions (according to the Wizard of Oz .. the artist formerly known as Clancy I)......

We came across this listing fairly recently (together with a gushing tribute from one of his adherents). The formulation is in itself unremarkable (and we're not going to repeat it here for that reason) simply reflecting a restatement of what is already covered quite adequately in existing AA (conference approved) literature (the Steps, Just for Today card etc). However what is of interest are the accompanying comments.

According to the commentator at least this approach is particularly helpful for “hardcore cases” (?) some of whom it appears have even been “referred” to the aforementioned Wizard! Moreover it has been “discovered that they are very effective when dealing with rock-bottom newcomers and with the high-bottom intellectual types” (are there any other kind?) and even “oldtimers who were struggling through a difficult period” (that seems to cover pretty well everyone then!)

So far so good (if not demonstrating a rather overenthusiastic tendency towards placing people in categories … so much easier than relating to them directly!). The 'fan' then goes on to specify further conditions:

I never give the newcomer the questions without also setting a time for them to complete their writing. Normally, I’ll give them the questions and expect them to be finished with their writing by the next day, and I’ll have them call me so that we can get together and discuss their answers and apply the solution to their problems.”

It is unclear whether this too forms part of the Wizard's method but we suspect so given his reputation. However the apparent contradiction to this accelerated process demonstrates itself clearly at this point especially if one takes into account the concluding comments (and yet more conditions!):

If the newcomer procrastinates and doesn’t meet the deadline for the questions I usually consider that they are not yet serious enough to approach their problem and I move on to help someone else.”

Now of course it could be argued that given the nature of the questions themselves the proposed time schedule is far too optimistic. If in fact the newcomer is serious about their recovery then they would probably require a lot more time to consider fully the implications of the questions, introspect accordingly, and then formulate their responses in a considered and reflective fashion. In light of this an overnight “cramming session” hardly suffices. What seems to be more important, or at least from the perspective outlined above, is that they conform to some rather arbitrarily determined schedule set by the 'examiner' (as these appear to be). Moreover the issue as to whether the newcomer is procrastinating seems to revolve around whether they meet the “deadline” imposed on them or not, and where failure implies instant dismissal. This mechanistic approach should be contrasted with that exemplified in the book “Alcoholics Anonymous” (Chapter 7, Working with Others) where there could not be discovered a greater antithesis. Throughout the text it is again and again emphasised that the “prospect” should not feel under any pressure, and be encouraged rather to take the lead than be treated as if they were some kind of errant school child. Unfortunately for the control freaks in our midst (and we include the above) this approach simply will not do! Whatever formulation you come across whether it be the Joe and Charlie so-called “Big Book Study” (where Chapter 7 is virtually ignored), the 'Dallas Cowboys' (aka Primary Purpose), the Back to Basics gang (see Primary Purpose link), the Visions mob (aka Road to Recovery, Joys of Recovery), all place the emphasis on 'control' by some kind of human authority rather than reliance on a Higher Power (one that is probably NOT human). The agenda is set by the 'controller', the outcome is 'dictated', and failure to 'comply' is punished with a range of sanctions. Finally the 'object' of their 'message' is generally treated thus rather than as a real human being - and disposed of accordingly!

For our part though we think we'll stick with the original method – a couple of alkies just trying to help each other! No deals.. no contract!

Cheers

Hemel Hempstead (Friday)

A recent email:

Hello.

I am a member of AA from Hemel Hempstead. I was fascinated to stumble across this website as what you describe is exactly what has happened …..at the Quaker Meeting House in Hemel. Even before seeing this website, the group mentality of a faction which has gradually expanded and grown in this meeting has been one which I have been referring to as “a cult.” These people travel everywhere together in the same cars, two have just begun a relationship and moved in with one another, they all aggressively insist that they are “recovered alcoholics” and when questioned on this term become quite unpleasant and have begun rapidly taking on “sponsees” who at a rate of knots (sometimes just a few days even doing half the steps in a matter of hours) who they then send out to immediately take on their own sponsors after only several days of sobriety. It is madness and a recipe for disaster. The meeting no longer feels a safe place to share and unfortunately the secretary of the meeting is chief amongst these people himself only 6 months sober and took on the meeting at around 2 months. They have also brought in to the group undesirable people who I have never before seen at the meeting and are frankly scary- looking men who seem to say nothing but simply watch. It is menacing and unpleasant. …. I no longer have a desire to be at that meeting. I am fortunate enough to have a couple of other good meetings close by but even in those, there is an effort amongst these “cultheads” to spread their tentacles. Hopefully the good guys in AA will prevail! I am only 13 months sober myself and have been fortunate to have been befriended by oldtimers early on. However, it is heartbreaking to see such abuse of the AA message.

Yours,

....”

(our edits)

Our reply:

Thank you for your mail. Sadly your experiences are far from uncommon in some parts of AA. We're interested to note your use of the word "faction” because that precisely describes what is taking place in AA (both here and in the US). The term "recovered" although it appears in the Big Book is indeed flourished by some almost as a badge of superiority and with the so-called "recovered" individual browbeating those who don't quite measure up - hardly in accordance with the principles of AA so clearly outlined in the very text they claim to be so expert in! Chris Raymer is part of the Primary Purpose gang, yet another faction who claim some kind of superior method (see also "Joe and Charlie" in this connection). They are of a view that everyone should be hurried through the programme (regardless of their individual condition or ability) at top speed - the faster the better - and regardless of whether this works or not. Frequently we are contacted by newcomers who are quite bewildered. They say they've got up to Step 8 (or whatever) and then relapsed. They genuinely don't understand why this has happened. They thought they were doing what was suggested but in the mad dash failed to get a proper grasp of Step 1. Similarly the tactic of arriving mob handed at meetings is quite common. Some of these characters are indeed quite intimidating - they are in fact thugs - no more no less. We're happy to hear that you've managed to form contacts with established members of AA with a more traditional and compassionate approach.”

PS In connection with the Primary Purpose/Joe and Charlie gang we've received the following tip off recently:

Hey Fellas,
Anonymous tip from Dallas… The Mother Ship [ie. Primary Purpose group, Dallas] is loosing [sic] members fast … defection by many members taking place …. (even Myers defected) …. I won’t give any more details but allegedly there is an e-mail floating around among group members about some interesting details about why men shouldn’t sponsor women even if they did found the Group ….. ; ) …. Sorry, I don’t have it and won’t ask my source for it.

Good Luck

......”

Mmmmm sounds familiar .. where have we heard all this before? Plymouth Road to Recovery was it? Dunno..... but it'll come back to us eventually.....

Cult “Where to Find” (GB) – update – and other matters!

YORKSHIRE

EAST KENT

Herne Bay: Big Book Salvation
Wednesday 7.30 The Retreat, RC Church, 2 Clarence Road

(outside affiliation with the Primary Purpose movement)

Dover Big Book Study
Monday 7.30 Our Lady of Dover RC Church, Roosevelt Road
[Contact: comes under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Southwark]
(outside affiliation with the Primary Purpose movement).

PS The word is that the two Primary Purpose contacts for these East Kent meetings – Harry K and Harry A (aka Batman and Robin) - have some rather interesting habits. We've learnt through the grapevine (no – not THAT Grapevine!) that Harry A (Robin), when challenged by the East Kent Intergroup about his inclusion in this outside directory as a contact for one of the above groups, denied all knowledge and claimed ….. identity theft! According to Harry A (aka Harry the Handbag) some person (or persons unknown) had maliciously ripped off his name and number and posted it off to Dallas (HQ of the Primary Purpose movement). In the subsequent interrogation (which did not include the use of thumbscrews) his story changed and he was asked if either group had agreed (through a group conscience) to their details being placed in the Primary Purpose directory. Obfuscation followed upon obfuscation whilst Harry A sought to evade his ruthless inquisitors. No one (including the hapless Handbag) seemed at all convinced by his feeble explanations. And yet the groups and his contact details still remain posted on the Primary Purpose website! As for Harry K (aka Batman – and holder of our prestigious Thug of the Month award) it would seem that he likes to get all “touchy feely” when it comes to carrying the one true, pure and unsullied AA message to the heathen (we mean you and us!) …. and most especially with the ladies. Apparently he's a fellow who likes to 'get up close and personal' when transmitting what he's got! Perhaps we've got this all wrong and he's merely a repressed tree hugger who's all confused! Or maybe it's just a hobby! Who can say!

AA Minority report 2012 (continued)(6)

It has to be seriously considered whether an A.A. group affiliated to a website is not in fact affiliated to an individual member’s private enterprise. Whether groups so affiliated to an outside enterprise can call themselves A.A. groups, whether GSO and intergroups ought to register groups so affiliated, unless the group and website are separately incorporated, giving no implication that the two are connected.

It has to be considered whether it is still wise for GSO to register groups without prior consultation with the local intergroup and whether certain groups which operate outside the A.A. service structure ought to be A.A. registered, when separately incorporated companies are competitively trading off the AA name and encouraging their own groups to operate both inside and outside AA:

As Bill W. States:

That we must, at all costs, avoid the professionalization of AA; that simple Twelfth Step work is never to be paid for; that AAs going into alcohol therapy should never trade on their AA connection; that there is not, and never can be, any such thing as an ‘AA therapist’.” (Bill W; Co-founder of A.A., A.A. Grapevine, June 1946, Language of the Heart page 29)

"Our membership Tradition does contain, however, one important qualification... .....We cannot lend the AA name, even indirectly, to other activities, however worthy. If we do so we shall become hopelessly compromised and divided. We think that AA should offer its experience to the whole world for whatever use can be made of it. But not its name. Nothing can be more certain.” (Bill W. ‘Tradition Three’, AA Grapevine 1948, Language of the Heart page 79-80)

The new dynamics to A.A. have exposed a double headed executive and created a situation in which neither A.A. Traditions nor warranties of Conference are withstanding. Clearly in Today’s A.A. a group can have another purpose or affiliation, contrary to warranty six:

Finally, any two or three alcoholics gathered together for sobriety may call themselves an A.A. group provided that, as a group, they have no other purpose or affiliation.”

There appears to be no body ultimately responsible for ensuring that the provision in this warranty is upheld.

There is no clear ultimate authority of Tradition Two; neither the trustees and GSO, nor the A.A. group Conscience appear to have clear delegated and ultimate responsibility, since both the intergroup and GSO can register A.A. groups.

Paradoxically, the present authority GSO has to register groups, over and above the intergroup conscience, serves a “tyranny of very small minorities invested with absolute power” (Concept V) rather than the ultimate authority of the A.A group conscience within the intergroup. Therefore the ultimate authority in the A.A group conscience is hamstrung. There is now a strong case for the trustees and GSO to pass ultimate authority and responsibility for group registration directly to the A.A. Group conscience within the intergroups.

A.A as such ought never be organised; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.” (Tradition Ten)

A condition to be avoided at all costs is double headed business or policy management. Authority can never be divided into equal halves.” (Concept X)

The main principles of Tradition Two are crystal clear: the A.A. groups are to be the final authority; their leaders are to be trusted with delegated responsibilities only.” (Concept I)

While the A.A. Service Structure deliberates, perhaps not yet adapted to the speed of modern communication and the newfound skills of our ubiquitous and ever perennial “promoter friend” (AA comes of Age page 130), the disaffected victims of coercion and misrepresentation are leaving, A.A. Is getting the public image of being a religious cult, and intergroups are experiencing strained relationships.

Extracts from conference question and committee responses, UK General Service Conference 2011, Committee 4, Question 2:

Can Conference make suggestions on how groups and Intergroups can work better to carry the message to the still suffering alcoholic? - There is evidence that strained relationships between some Groups and Intergroups could be inhibiting the effectiveness of our primary purpose.” (AA service News 145, 2010)

This committee found that strained relations between some groups and Intergroups can inhibit the effectiveness of our primary purpose…..” (Committee 4, Question 2) (AA Service news 147, 2011)

With 30 certified facilities worldwide (Kelly Foundation website) and nearly 400 treatment centres using Recovery Dynamics materials (“Carry This Message”, Joe McQ, rear cover) indoctrinating alcoholics in Joe McQ's hybrid A.A./Recovery Dynamics program, alongside subtle indoctrination of A.A. members via “Joe and Charlie” Big Book Study audio recordings, and a global affiliation of Primary Purpose Big Book Study A.A. groups, headed by the Primary Purpose Group of A.A. (Dallas), intergroups ought to prepare a strategy for de-programming any confused, brainwashed newcomers who believe they are on a dual purpose mission to educate A.A. and the still suffering alcoholic. Moreover, Public Information committees ought to be developing a strategy for informing the general public, especially emphasising the fact A.A. is not a religious organisation or an alcoholism education program.

Of highest importance would be our relations with medicine and religion. Under no circumstances must we get into competition with either. If we appeared to be a new religious sect, we’d be done for. (AA Grapevine June 1955, Language of the Heart page 150)

Education will not only pay off in numbers treated; it can pay off even more handsomely in prevention… … Now who is going to do all this education? Obviously, it is both a community job and a job for specialists. Individually, we AAs can help, but AA as such cannot, and should not, get directly into this field.” (Bill W. AA Grapevine March 1958. Language of the Heart page 186-187)

Nothing however, could be so unfortunate for A.A.’s future as an attempt to incorporate any of our personal theological views into A.A. teaching, practice or tradition.” (Bill W. AA Comes of Age page 232)

Beyond a Higher Power, as each of us may vision him, A.A. must never, as a society, enter the field of dogma or theology….. Lest we kill our usefulness by being bogged down in theological contention” (Bill W. Letter 1954, As Bill sees It page 116)

If we recognise religion is the province of the clergy and the practice of medicine is for doctors, we can helpfully cooperate with both” (Concept 12, warranty 5)

We have no doctrine that has to be maintained, no membership that has to be enlarged, We have no authority that has to be supported, no prestige, power, or pride that has to be satisfied” (Concept 12, warranty five)

Comment:

The problem of 'outside affiliation' has been clearly identified here - specifically the “Back to Basics” and “Primary Purpose” franchises (among others). Moreover the 'blurring' of the lines between AA proper and the various enterprises (in some cases clearly commercial) utilising the 12 Step method has led to widespread accusations that AA itself is profiting from the recovery “industry”. In most cases this is untrue - with the exception of literature sales. Income from this source is utilised to subsidise the activities of the service structure (in clear contravention of our own traditions ie. Tradition 7). Since a proportion of these sales go to outside agencies eg. treatment centres etc then effectively the fellowship is being subsidised by these (again a clear breach of the traditions). This problem has twice been acknowledged by the AA Conference in Great Britain and on both occasions our delegates have ducked their responsibilities. Third time lucky perhaps? Thus far the leadership, which should have been forthcoming, is more often than not entirely absent. It is time therefore for the groups (and members) – and quite rightly - to take direct responsibility (and be accountable) for the conduct of the fellowship. Inclusion in the AA directory should be administered solely by the relevant intergroups (ie. local Where to Finds). These local lists (and only with the approval of the local groups) should then be submitted to GSO for inclusion in the national register. (In this connection it may be that the intergroup itself is compromised eg. West Kent, Plymouth, 'Wessex Intergroup' et al, and steps may need to be taken to ensure that these elements of the service structure are similarly 'quarantined'). Any group which has an outside affiliation should be “delisted” and its members (qua group members) refused participation in the AA service structure. Groups which run websites (as argued above) should also be considered as having an outside affiliation and treated accordingly (eg. Road to Recovery, Design for Living etc). Additionally the service structure at every level should take care to ensure that ALL interested parties are notified of the “delisting” and therefore that these groups (and their representatives) may no longer be considered as being associated in any way with AA. All parts of the service hierarchy need to adopt a much more active role in ensuring that AA principles, programme, history etc (as outlined in AA conference approved literature) are communicated clearly not only within the fellowship but also to those agencies with which we cooperate. At the moment the message we are sending out is mixed, and frequently communicated by people who have little or nothing to do with AA. All of this boils down to a single important principle

WE ARE RESPONSIBLE …. OR ARE WE NOT!
