Share Magazine – should it be renamed …... The Plymouth Express?

A member contacted us with regard to a recent issue of Share (spot the misspelling on the webpage!) magazine. In their perusal they had noted the predominance of contributions from the Plymouth area (usually from the local cult group: Plymouth Road to Recovery). This is not the first time that mention has been made of this phenomenon. Indeed Share magazine not infrequently resembles the official publication for that group so infested is it with the 'lack of experience, strength and hope' emanating principally from that source. Article after article from this cult group merely restates their central philosophy: get a sponsor and do what your sponsor says! No need to bother with all that God mumbo jumbo! A human power is the answer …. and make no mistake! However if you finally tire of the bland outpourings from Plymouth and find your 'psychic defences' crumbling under this avalanche of dross you can always take recourse in the ramblings of Happy Dennis (see blog for more). Now Happy Dennis is well known in the Ealing area of London. He is the founder of a series of meetings mostly based at the Centre for Independent Living, Bayham Rd. His sponsor is David “The Icon” C, a professional Roman Catholic and self-proclaimed aesthete based in the US (although formerly from the UK), and himself and ex-sponsee of David B (founder of the Joys of Recovery which itself has produced the Road to Recovery franchise ….. and so the incestuous circle is rendered complete!). But to return to the Happy One.... Dennis it would seem is straying more and more into the realms of total unreality. We thought he had reached his apogee in the Sunday meeting (at the above location) where the participants are exhorted literally to “jump for joy” at the end of the proceedings. But no... various pronouncements have now followed with respect to a number of alcoholism unrelated subjects including sex outside marriage, saunas and women, all of which seem to reflect some aspect of David “The Icon” C's rather extreme brand of Catholicism. Clearly 'fooling around' outside marriage is out of the question but one must wonder how the souls of our more distant ancestors are faring given that Roman Catholicism has only been around for the last couple of thousand years? Are we to take it that these ignorant unfortunates are condemned to do a 'bit of porridge' in purgatory to expunge thereby all traces of sinfulness from their souls or perhaps they are presently languishing in that hellish realm forever abandoned for merely doing what nature clearly intended? However given the present debate (and possible legislation) on same sex “marriage” we are eagerly looking forward not only to some pronouncement on the subject from the Vatican but also as to what David “The Icon” C (in his current manifestation as Dennis) has to say on these vexing questions! Any guesses? But when it comes to saunas it is obvious why such cautions have been issued. It is well known that these are the favoured resorts of those dreadful malefactors – THE HOMOSEXUALS – whose sole ambition in life is to seduce all innocents and lead them down the path of eternal damnation. Finally women …. well what more need be said? It was after all that awful hussy Eve whose fatal allure finally led us all to inhabit this vale of woe and misery. Mind you that Adam was a bit 'easy' wasn't he! All that for just a bite of an apple? Really? But such creatures fashioned thus from this flawed template should be avoided at all costs, and moreover without hesitation lest we too be cast down into the eternal pit! Etc etc blah blah blah...... and so it goes on and on and on ….ad infinitum.

So to return to Share..... Is it really that difficult to get contributions from the remainder of the fellowship? There are after all about 20,000 regular members of AA in Great Britain (but see *). Or is there something else going on here? When we previously contacted the magazine to ask for an explanation for their apparent bias towards this group (and indeed Happy Dennis) we were told that there was such a dearth of submissions that they had no other choice! We pointed out that we were aware of a number of articles sent in by members but which had subsequently never seen the light of day! What about these? Here we were pointed in the direction of the editorial policy which effectively rules out anything but the bland and 'politically' correct (even if this does only serve to mask a more insidious corruption!). But one only has to look at the I-Say forum hosted on the Grapevine site in the US to find out what AA members REALLY think about what's going on in their fellowship. Perhaps it's time for Share to grow up and follow their example. A more robust debate might serve to blow the cobwebs away and alert the fellowship to what's going on in their very midst? A little less censorship if you please!

The Fellas (Friends of Alcoholics Anonymous)

PS The argument that a more lively debate necessarily leads to a weakening of unity …. We don't buy that for one minute! Indeed we believe the precise opposite! Obviously!

Ealing: Insights into some of the cult 'personalities'

There are actually 2 brands or strains of the cult here. One is led by a man called Patrick who is sponsored by a Scottish old timer called Don who was a sponsee of David B and attended the Joys of Recovery in the old days before Vision[s] was established. The groups Patrick influences are much more toned down. They preach the 6 [suggestions] things and 14 defects version of step 4 etc, but it is not as "cult like" as the Vision[s]. However having said that, Patrick is getting worse and more extreme. He is mesmerized by Dennis and has swallowed the yarn about AA being less successful than it was because of the mainstream of AA adopting treatment centre ideas and not doing the steps properly.”

Then we have our "Happy Dennis", who is, I think, still sponsored by David [Icons] C. His groups are off the Richter scale in happy talk. People are expected to jump up and down for joy after they say the serenity prayer. Also the last time I attended one of his groups, on Saturday morning at Bayham Road, Dennis was sharing that he was "supercalifragilisticexpialidociously happy" (!!!!) He also "jumps" every time he speaks to you, to show you how happy he is. From a distance it looks like he has a permanent bad case of hiccoughs. (!!!!)

Finally to Denis' execrable sponsor - the Icon. You mentioned his so-called "way of beauty" (a fascist concept if ever there was) . Have you seen his TV series [web show] ?? ...

He rubbishes modern art in a most ignorant way. And in the program about the art of other cultures he successfully insults Buddhism and Hindu art saying that he wouldn't have it in his house or even his garden, but would (mercifully!!) stop short or smashing it with a hammer!! Wow, how good of him! You really couldn't make up this level of arrogance. It reflects everything ….. regarding his prejudice against "eastern" art and philosophy and his obsession with extreme Catholicism. So sad he also pushes this puke-inducing garbage into the domain of AA !!”

An Ealing cult meeting:

There were about 30 people present. On each chair there was a copy of a little yellow booklet (A6 size) of about 28 pages entitled " BIG BOOK QUOTES" and containing selected quotations from the Big Book taken from every chapter of the first 164 pages (main text) plus a few pages from the stories section of the book.....

The format of the meeting was that a passage from the Big Book was read out (on this occasion it was a few pages from Bill's Story) However I did notice that at least half of the meeting (which largely consisted of young men in their early days/years), were looking at and reading from the yellow BIG BOOK QUOTES rather than from a copy of our AA Big Book.

After the passage was read out, they were instructed by Dennis (aka "happy Dennis" or "Mad Dennis" depending on your perspective) to share according to his numbered selected quotes from his compilation of BIG BOOK QUOTES. This was to be their reference for sharing in the meeting. The format is explained in the little yellow booklet. The yellow book of course has been compiled and concocted by Mad Dennis himself. …..... And on the back cover, the website of our modern-and-pagan-art-iconoclast extreme Catholic friend David C........, …..... is advertised - apparently "we" find it a very good website to look at!! Who "we" are is not fully explained.

In addition to the yellow book of quotations there was a PINK CARD [Ealing cult meeting list] on the literature table. The literature table was not very well supplied with the full range of AA literature by the way.”

Dennis F is a VERY self-willed and somewhat childish, yet charismatic individual. He uses very flamboyant and exaggerated language. He says things like "I'm very very very very very very happy... and I'm even more happy than that" etc. Then he giggles in a childish way. Ken Dodd is a good comparison, but not so benign. Dennis has no humility whatsoever. For him, humility is just a morning pose (kneeling posture) and then he gets up and dedicates himself to control and domination ...”

The best comparison I can make about Dennis is he talks fast like someone hypermanic. He is always "happy" but I would call it mania more than happiness. It isn’t a sober happy anyway. He is an attention seeker and a control freak and has been since day one. His idea of humility is that you get on your knees - in other words humility is a pose or a posture not a modus operandi or an attitude. He giggles childishly and makes up doggerel "poetry" about being happy etc. He constantly misquotes the literature to suit his own ends. He is overbearing and domineering. He is a narcissist - he wants everyone to agree with him and to be a reflection of himself. In other words he is a typical cult guru with a personality disorder.......”

Comment: It's nice to know that AA is in such safe and SANE hands!

More Ealing madness!

““Do not get a job until you have completed step 5” Huh??! What??!! Not heard that rule before? Well perhaps because it is not the message of Alcoholics Anonymous. It is, however, the message of one “happy” Dennis, the hyper-manic control freak of Ealing. (We put the word happy in inverted comas because we feel it is inaccurate to call him “happy” - mania and happiness are not the same thing.) The advice he is dishing out to any newcomer who asks him for sponsorship seems to be getting more and more wacko. According to our witness he tells new sponsees that they cannot go to work until they have completed step 5. In practice this is proving to be rather dangerous and damaging advice. For example, any sponsee of his who is in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance – a government benefit given to those who are out of work on the condition that they look for work and will accept a job if they are offered it – could find themselves in serious trouble. In the strict world of welfare benefits any failure to look for work, or to refuse work offered while receiving Job Seekers Allowance, could result in suspension of the benefit. But an unfortunate newcomer caught up in “happy” Dennis’ mad world of sponsorship is not allowed to work until they have completed Step 5. This means of course that they will be going to the Job Centre with the intention of deceiving the government that they are looking for work, whereas in fact they cannot have that intention because they have been “ordered” by their lunatic sponsor “happy” Dennis that they must not work until they have completed Step 5. “I felt uncomfortable and dishonest” says one (now working) ex-sponsee of “happy” Dennis. “I was going to the Job Centre, but I was not really looking at the jobs. I had to pretend. I was really scared I might get found out and lose my benefit, and then end up homeless and without any money to live. I rushed through Steps 4 and 5 as fast as I could just so I could feel honest and start working again.”

We would like to know where exactly in the Big Book - or any other approved literature of Alcoholics Anonymous - does it say that we cannot work or accept a job until we have completed Step 5. The literature does, however, tell us that rushing through Steps 4 and 5 is not good practice for long term recovery. Is it not a disgrace that newcomers in the Ealing area are being forced to deceive the government by behaving dishonestly, and with some threat to their financial security, and moreover endangering their own future sobriety, in order to abide by the insane, irresponsible and selfishly-invented “rules” of one “happy” Dennis? AA has to operate within the Law. The activities of “happy” Dennis of Ealing bring AA into disrepute, and put vulnerable individuals at risk. “

Comment: We only put a fraction of what we hear from the area on the site. You simply would not believe what is going on in Ealing at the moment! See our Cult: Where to Find (GB) for more details on the cult meetings here (and elsewhere).

CULT THUG BULLIES DISABLED PENSIONER OUT OF EALING MEETING

It is understood, from various sources, that there was recently a nasty little incident at the Bayham Road Centre for Independent Living, Ealing, London W5. This Centre is currently providing a venue for several cult meetings masquerading as Alcoholics Anonymous. At the one of these cult meetings, a certain zealous young cult clone, Tim by name, objected to the sharing of an old Scottish man in his 70’s who had recently come back from a slip. The pensioner in question is disabled and needs to use a walking stick. He is a well known AA member in the area, having attended meetings in the Ealing locality for over 2 decades. Young Tim took issue with the rather robust and rustic “everyday language” of this tough old Scotsman. However it seems that patience, tolerance and “keep coming back” isn’t part of the message being carried at this cult meeting. Instead, Tim ranted at the old AA stalwart - “I FIND YOU OFFENSIVE, GET OUT!!”

We sincerely hope that the old chap managed to find a REAL AA meeting where he can get the help, understanding and support he clearly needs.

We understand that Tim is well known for informing all who have the stomach to listen to him how much he kneels, and lecturing us on how we should all kneel too. It would seem we have here the possible phenomenon of a cult “spiritual paradox” – The more they kneel, the more arrogant they become. He also ostentatiously prays in public, saying grace and crossing himself before eating his bacon sandwich at the coffee shop after the meeting. Hmmm, how very spiritual! Such piety masking such arrogance! Cunning, baffling and powerful indeed!

Still, we mustn’t be too hard on young Tim. He hasn’t exactly been given a good example, or the real message of AA for that matter. His sponsor is the yawningly dull and personality-challenged founder/gruppenfuhrer of the Friday Guildford Newcomers Cult Meeting, Jim W. Apparently, apart from his arrogance (which is considerable), Jim’s hair-style is the only personality trait worthy of any note. And who inspires Jim to such levels of tedium?

Well none other than David C Icons – the man of 1000 opinions, and author of the …........ Perhaps we can also add the title of “author of the Way of coercion, voyeurism and Dangerous medical advice”, as this same David C Icon is the co-author of the “recovery” website that is mentioned elsewhere in this website, and which has caused, and is still continuing to cause, division and disruption within AA, grossly corrupting and distorting the AA message to the unwary, and prompting dangerous and potentially fatal advice on medical, moral and psychological matters best left to professionals.

Meanwhile we wonder if the Ealing Centre for Independent Living, which expressly caters for the disabled, are aware of the bullying and abuse of a disabled pensioner that has taken place on their premises?

Here is a reminder of their address for any who might like to enquire.

The 'Ealing project' – latest update!

Well the bizarre machinations in Ealing proceed apace – and seemingly day by day! Could this long-running 'soap' displace the hacking scandal aux Murdochs from headlining every newspaper? Probably not - but then these have departed already from that position of prominence so fickle are the press in their inky devotions! It would seem (or so the rumours go) that the 'brawn' behind this little attempt at empire building has done a 'runner' - or 'gone to ground' - for not a sight or sound (some would say thankfully!) of the Happy One has been seen for some little while now. But this is very much Dennis' MO apparently when it comes to 'facing the music'...... Start something up but leave somebody else to carry the can as the ordure well and truly hits the fan! Still the 'brains' (by 'brains' we actually mean 'control freak') behind the outfit is still very much in charge of operations, orders being issued by the High Command on an almost daily basis as the plot (and accumulating debris) thickens. This particular ego maniac goes by the name of David C who though British by birth is currently resident in the US. For those of you who are not familiar with the fellow he made his début performance in the UK back in the mid 80s, his novitiate undertaken at that well-known venue “The Joys of Recovery”(or 'Ploys of Recovery' as we prefer to call it), Collingham Gardens, under the tutelage of David B (the founder of the Visions cult and the source of that well-known but largely meaningless epithet 'Misery is Optional' - an expression which has only a minimal connection with AA's spiritual principles and derives rather from the somewhat obsessive and SELF-promoting pretensions of its author). On the departure finally of the head honcho to that “Great Meeting in the Sky” (the air ringing behind him apparently with cries of “This is NOT AA! This is NOT AA!” a much favoured mantra of his, and oft repeated at local AA meetings where he would happily (and apparently at length) harangue the assembled brethren with his particular take on the subject (and with such fervour that the members, some almost overcome with his devotion, would invite him most heartily to leave!)), David “The Icon” C took up the “spiritual tool-kit” bequeathed to him by his mentor, and proceeded to carry the cult's particularly perverse message to us the 'unbelievers” in AA. He was however not alone in his quest to save us all from our foolhardiness and assembled a motley crew of devotees to assist him in his 'holy' but largely SELF-appointed mission. One of these is of course the aforementioned 'Happy Dennis', a fellow who can really only be described as a “sandwich short of a picnic”, “not the full shilling”, “driving on only three wheels”, “a banana short of a bunch” (and so on in this general theme) and who has been so far “rocketed into a fourth dimension” (and quite probably a fifth or even a sixth!) that he will probably never make it back to Earth in one piece!

And here is the latest list for the Ealing 'project'. It is rather difficult to determine exactly how many of these are actually functioning at the moment and indeed which ones still subscribe to the cult 'ethos' of “carrying the message “ through bullying and coercion... but nevertheless here we go:

Mon 07:30 West Ealing: Great Feeling in Ealing, 1 Bayham Road Junction with Bedford Road. (seems to have reverted to AA)

Mon 13:00 West Ealing: Community Centre, Green Man Lane.

Mon 18:00 West Ealing: A Vision For You, 1 Bayham Road Junction with Bedford Rd.

Tue 07:30 Ealing: Healthy Feeling in Ealing, 1 Bayham Road Junction with Bedford Rd. (seems to have reverted to AA)

Tue 09.45 West Ealing: Big Book Happy Focus, Community Centre, Green Man Lane. (reported closed down due to lack of support)

Wed 07:30 West Ealing: A.M Reflections, 1 Bayham Rd Junction with Bedford Rd

Wed 13:00 West Ealing: Community Centre, Green Man Lane.

Wed 18:00 West Ealing: Community Centre, Green Man Lane.

Wed 19:30 West Ealing: Big Book Focus, Community Centre, Green Man Lane,

Thurs 07:30 West Ealing: Radian Feeling, 1 Bayham Road Junction with Bedford Road.

Thurs 09.45 West Ealing: Big Book Joyous Focus, Community Centre, Green Man Lane.

Thurs 13:00 West Ealing: Green Man Big Book Discussion Community Centre, Green Man Lane.

Thurs 18:00 West Ealing: Happy, Joyous & Free, 1 Bayham Road Corner of Bedford Road.

Fri 07:30 West Ealing: 1 Bayham Rd Junction with Bedford Road.

Sat 09:00 West Ealing: Wonderful Feeling in Ealing, 1 Bayham Road Junction with Bedford Road. (definitely cult)

Sat 18:00 West Ealing: 1 Bayham Rd, Junction with Bedford Road.

Sun 08:45 West Ealing: Sponsored Walks, 1 Bayham Rd Junction with Bedford Road. (definitely cult)

Sun 13:30 West Ealing: 1 Bayham Rd Junction with Bedford Road.

Sun 19:00 West Ealing: Step & Tradition, 1 Bayham Rd, Junction with Bedford Road. (definitely cult)

(We will update this list accordingly as soon as we receive information).

It should be noted that even those meetings that have reverted to AA were set up whilst failing to consider their impact on already existing AA groups in the area and certainly without consulting them in accordance with Tradition 4. There is still unfinished business to be concluded here!

Whitstable (East Kent)/Ealing (West London)/Cambridge

The word is that the “pointy headed ones” from the Tankerton Tuesday cult group are 'sniffing' around Whitstable Wednesday AA meeting again. They've tried before to gain control of this group when one of their members became secretary, and shortly after which a whole succession of clones turned up at the meeting with the usual scripted sharing which went something like this: “blah blah …. my sponsor ….... blah blah blah … always do what my sponsor says... blah blah.....my sponsor took me through the steps...blah blah blah … happy, joyous and free.. blah blah blah.. sponsor this.....blah blah.... sponsor that.....blah blah...” and so on ad infinitum and ad nauseam. Otherwise the infestation in East Kent seems to be largely contained with the cult groups either stagnating or in decline. There is now a clear delineation between the cult (referred to variously as “Step Nazis”, “Taliban”, “Visions” (or even “Visionaries” … God help us!) or just plain “cult”) on one hand, and genuine AA on the other, a trend which we hope will continue long into the future.... And now ... talking of infestations....

… the news is that the Ealing Tuesday Green Man Lane (9.45am) cult meeting has closed due to lack of support. This is one of the thirteen or so (at the last count) meetings that 'Happy Dennis' (so-called) had started up to propagate his bizarre version of AA and its programme. Happy Dennis himself is sponsored by David “The Icon” C (successor to David B, founder of the Visions cult in the UK), “The Icon” being the author of a cult website promoted by Dennis in his very own printed literature (in probable breach of copyright), this “Little Yellow Book” being distributed not only in the Ealing meetings but even further afield eg. Eastbourne. We are informed that his efforts seem to focus rather on quantity than quality but even here many of the Ealing cult meetings fail to attract more than a handful of punters. The viability of the operation rests finally on the low rents charged for the use of the facilities. The landlords of the Bayham Rd location (Ealing Centre for Independent Living: http://www.ecil.org/) for example charge a mere £5.00 per session which makes it an attractive proposition for anyone wishing to start up their own franchise. We have also received evidence that Dennis is using contact information derived from Share magazine to further propagate his “message”. Incidentally we observe that the Happy One's response to the Eastbourne letter (see below) - when it was communicated to him as an email attachment – clearly demonstrates his irresponsible and arrogant attitude with regard to all matters pertaining to AA and its traditions. We quote:

“... the text [Eastbourne letter] you attached to the email has nothing to do with me. I don't see any reason why this is a matter I should be involved with in any way”

(This sounds like a response you'd get from a “Murdoch testimony” doesn't it! We know nothing, see nothing, hear nothing! Nothing to do with us!! A bad case of DENIAL perhaps!).

He goes on to argue that the 13 groups included in his very own Where to Find (printed and distributed in breach of the traditions) are “independent” groups. Now does he mean “autonomous” groups (but leaving out the second part of Tradition Four - a much favoured cult tactic!) or does he mean completely independent of AA (in which case why are these groups still presented in the local and national Where to Finds if they are in fact not AA groups at all? Another question for South Middlesex Intergroup to consider perhaps?)

.. and continuing with our whirlwind tour of GB (note: the cult is not a localised issue!)..... a communication from Cambridge. We quote from some email correspondence (with that individual's permission):

Ok, so I was a bit nervous of letting you know about the Saturday meetings in Cambridge, but now I feel I have to - I went there in February as I was convinced nothing else would work. I was called by a seemingly very lovely lady and encouraged to attend the 'A Vision For You' meeting that night. Well! How loved I felt! How understood! How cared for! I continued going for a few weeks and attended the womens meetings on a Tuesday, the 'beginners' meetings on a Sunday and one 'Primary Purpose' meeting on a Monday night. It all seemed wonderful and I felt 'blessed' to have them, until...at one of the 'womens'' meetings, a clearly, very distressed and unhappy lady told about how she had succumbed to drink and how ashamed she was. Oh My God! I felt so sad for her but all she got were dagger glares, tuts and no sign of help whatsoever. That scared me to be honest. However, I continued. Surely it was just a bad night for everyone? The 'lovely lady' who had called me became my 'sponsor' and I began to go to her house for 'big book' study. Hmm. Interesting. she was full of 'love and laughter' but something felt wrong. This is about me stopping drinking yes? Not you telling me that the only way is God? Not you making me do 'homework' and telling me that there are 'many people who are not alcoholics as they do not have a spiritual issue'? These people must be ignored, hated, kept out of 'our meetings'. I was frankly terrified by the passion. I read the Big Book, I tried to understand these mad people. I couldn't. I was 'loved' by some, sneered at by others. I was hugged, ignored...I told everyone that I had been diagnosed as 'bi -polar, I was told that is wrong, you have nothing but a disease called 'alcoholism' stay away from these doctors. I had to leave. I cannot believe that such people are allowed to peddle their nonsense. I am never ever going anywhere near AA again. How can this be happening. I am more than happy for you to publish this.

Ealing update! The pressure mounts.....

Below is a copy of the letter of complaint sent by an Eastbourne group to South Middlesex Intergroup (forwarded to us by a member from South Middlesex - our usual thanks for this contribution. All edits are ours). We'll leave it to you to draw your own conclusions. However the Eastbourne group has demonstrated that they at least understand the meaning of the Traditions – and are willing to put them INTO ACTION – unlike the cult groups currently infesting Ealing. The ball is now well and truly in SMIG's court!

Happy Dennis (aka The Scourge of Ealing) – The Missionary!

It would seem that 'Happy Dennis' is not content with carrying the good word to the heathen of Ealing. No... He's spread his wings further afield, as far away even as deepest darkest Eastbourne. A missive was despatched by a member from that locality (to South Middlesex Intergroup) complaining about the activities of the new Messiah in their neck of the woods. Apparently the Happy One (who seems to have completely slipped his moorings with reality) was advising Eastbourne newcomers to check out a “non AA website that suggested to members not to take prescribed medication.” Moreover our correspondent indicated that: “This website address has recently appeared on the pink cards that list Ealing meetings and various SMIG members pointed out, as did the letter from Eastbourne, that such practice was not in line with AA’s Traditions. There was a general concern amongst SMIG members that some of these new meetings that are springing up will reduce numbers at other meetings and make the meeting of tradition 7 more difficult (duplicated rent costs etc) as well as contravene Tradition 4. Some members suggested that the Bayham Road and Green Man Lane meetings be deleted from the official AA meetings list if our Traditions continue to be transgressed. [name omitted] offered to write a letter to flag up these issues with the person concerned and for copies to go to London Region and York, and a number of SMIG members offered to meet at ….....'s home to help write this letter on behalf of our intergroup to express misgivings about certain developments in some Ealing meetings. A draft of this letter will be presented to SMIG at the next intergroup meeting in August for approval/amendments before it is sent off.”

So it would seem that South Middlesex Intergroup is finally lumbering into action (but only after being prodded quite a few times) to deal with the Ealing infestation. (Incidentally we have been informed that the Intergroup itself uses the Bayham Rd location (Happy Dennis' HQ) free of charge! Could there be a conflict of interest here??) The good news though is that all is not well even amongst the ranks of the “Blessed Ones”. Dissent has broken out and there are signs that the 'mission' is beginning to fray at the edges with at least one meeting already reverting to AA (to be confirmed). Moreover we are delighted to report that aacultwatch has been banned by the Ealing High Command! We are considered entirely unsuitable reading material for newcomers to the Fellowship. We wonder what they will do? You know what they say about forbidden fruit! All the more enticing! For our part we regard it as the highest compliment! So keep up the good work of publicising the site amongst cult members!

More on the cult "network" - Richmond, Tolworth ....

"Thank you for your reply,

John B does indeed attend Hampton Wick and he was one of the founders of the Richmond meeting along with a chap called Donald (who was sponsored by David B) and a few others. From my memory I remember Hampton Wick was opened on Kingston Hill shortly after the Richmond meeting was formed in 1997 or 1998. Another meeting was formed from the Richmond meeting: Tolworth Newcomers - a Thursday night meeting with printed literature cards containing 'the six suggestions' displayed on the top table where the secretary and chair sit. They also used to attend a restaurant after the meeting but they opted to have a food buffet in the hall after the meeting instead. Also, most worryingly, you are assigned a sponsor at this meeting. If you are new you have your number extracted from you and then told who your sponsor is going to be. When I was new to AA over 20 years ago I had great difficulty in saying no, so I can imagine how newcomers feel at this "newcomers" meeting.

I am personally fairly familiar with the Ealing meetings myself. What's been going on is Happy Dennis has made there be four meetings a day in Ealing, most of them being at either Bayham Road or Green Man Lane. Unfortunately some long-standing AA meetings have been dwindling and thinning-out to the point of closing as a result of an earlier meeting opening round the corner. Keep an eye on the Northfields meeting on Sunday morning; this meeting is a long-standing AA meeting, or should I say 'was', but it seems to be getting taken over by various sponsees of the Ealing brigade.

Keep an eye out for a guy called Richard E; he is the one who started the cult within CA and is famous (or infamous) in AA among West and South-West London. He is exactly like David B (I met David B on several occasions); when he attends AA meetings (which is uncommon now as he mainly does CA), he introduces himself as a 'recovered' alcoholic and then proceeds to tell the meeting that they're doing it wrong. He sponsors many individuals at once, and they are taken through the steps and begin sponsoring others after around four weeks of sobriety. Many of them relapse. He will point out to his sponsees who in the meeting is and is not alcoholic. He elects himself to sponsor others (i.e. "I will be your sponsor"). Every sponsee of his is required to attend a 'Big Book Study' at his house, where all he does is gets them to highlight the parts of the Big Book which he thinks are relevant (although he doesn't highlight the bit in The Family afterward which says "Now about health..." or the part in Working with Others that talks about not rushing the newcomer). He brainwashes his sponsees with the '3% recovery rate' (or is it 2%? I think he changes it each time), and as a result, his sponsees all attend meetings with chips on their shoulders and share that everyone else is doing it wrong, or 'not really an alcoholic'. His sponsees are not allowed to attend NA meetings, and the only AA meeting they are allowed to attend seems to be Hampton Wick Friday. He tells everyone (not just his sponsees) that they should not take medication. One of his sponsees was secretary at the Saturday morning meeting at Bayham Road and one time when I was there he shared "my sponsor told me what to do, he told me which meetings to go to and he told me how to recover" (does that sound like an oxymoron?). You people of aacultwatch would probably assume this is cult standard, but what worries me is that I was talking to one of Richard's sponsees after a meeting the other week in Ealing and he was telling me how Richard called him and said "pick me up and give me a lift into Kingston", and when the sponsee said he was busy, Richard apparently responded "I am your sponsor. You will give me a lift to Kingston". If there's anything that makes me think of a cult it's this; not only is controlling what people do in AA he's controlling what they do outside AA. There is unfortunately a lot of contempt towards him in the Richmond/Twickenham/Teddington area - an area that is otherwise harmonious within AA, with a wide fellowship.

Sorry I've waffled, but I thought it would be of interest, seeing as there wasn't any mention of Richard on the site. Some individuals have stood up to him, but most people shrug it off and say "I can only keep my side of the street clean".

Glad to be of service. May it continue.

Ealing going Viral!

The problem:

We've received yet more complaints with regard to the activities of the Ealing groups based at Bayham Rd and the Green Man Lane Community Centre. There have been reports that these groups: pursue an anti-prescribed medication policy (contrary to AA guidelines); that meetings have been open without consultation with neighbouring (and legitimate AA) groups (in breach of Tradition Four and with detrimental effects upon attendance at these latter groups); that these meetings supply non-conference approved literature some of which appears to be in breach of AAWS copyright (who have incidentally been notified of this); that these groups are affiliated with an outside organisation, which renders them ineligible to call themselves AA groups (under Tradition 3):

“Our membership ought to include all who suffer from alcoholism. Hence we may refuse none who wish to recover. Nor ought A.A. membership ever depend upon money or conformity. Any two or three alcoholics gathered together for sobriety may call themselves an A.A. group, provided that, as a group, they have no other affiliation.”

Finally - that they are bringing AA into disrepute and acting contrary to the interests of AA unity (Tradition 1).

We have been asked to present some ideas that may be employed by the local groups to ensure that this situation is remedied.

The solution:

Firstly groups may ensure that they are not contaminated by this influence by employing cult-proofing techniques (see here). The advice contained here can be modified to suit local circumstances.

Secondly we would advise the local AA groups to call group consciences to decide on a plan of concerted action. This can result in the following decisions (implemented by South Middlesex Intergroup):

a) that the Bayham Road and Green Man Lane meetings be removed from the Local Where to Find;
b) that these groups are no longer eligible to participate in the service structure.(under Traditions 3 and 4 (amongst others)) ie. that any GSR representation at intergroup will no longer be recognised, that their members may no longer hold any intergroup positions, and moreover may not participate in those parts of the service structure that bring them into contact with newcomers eg. phone responders, twelve step calls, public information etc;

The above will have the effect of separating them from the formal service structure of AA and moreover protect the most vulnerable from their activities

It would be useful additionally if AA groups regularly announced these facts at their meetings to ensure this information is widely disseminated (especially to newcomers). ie. that the Bayham Rd and Green Man Lane meetings may no longer be regarded as legitimate AA meetings.

Thirdly members can express their concerns directly to the relevant Intergroup (in this instance South Middlesex - contacting them directly by email or by post), asking them what action they are taking to deal with the situation. Here is the link to their website:

http://www.aa-gb.org.uk/london/southmiddlesex/

Their postal address is: A.A Intergroup, South Middlesex, Jacob House, 3-5 Cynthia Street
London N1 9JF

Their email address is: s-middx-eclo@aa-email.org.uk
(We have already contacted them by email and will follow up on our enquiry and let you know the results).

Additionally (and if members wish to) they can copy their complaint to GSO York.

Here is their postal address: The General Service Office, The General Service Board of Alcoholics Anonymous (Great Britain) Limited, PO Box 1, 10 Toft Green, York, YO1 7NJ

Here is their email address: gso@alcoholics-anonymous.org.uk

Although GSO is unable directly to take action it will be on the record that a complaint has been made and this will then be passed on to the relevant intergroup.

Fourthly action may be taken to have the Bayham Rd and Green Lane meetings themselves closed down. This can be achieved by contacting the relevant landlords of the premises that these groups use and request that their tenancies be terminated on the grounds indicated above. The most useful approach would be to present them with information (and evidence) relating to the the anti-prescribed medication policy that the groups have adopted.

The landlords for the Bayham Rd meetings are: ECIL - Ealing Centre for Independent Living, 1 Bayham Road, West Ealing, London W13 0TQ

Your enquiry should be addressed to: Wendy Starkie who is the chair of the ECIL management and governance committee and/or Sian Vasey who is the director of ECIL

Their phone number is: 0208 840 8573

Email contacts are by form submission. Click here

(Note: as far as we are aware this organisation is quite ignorant of the activities of their tenants and is otherwise of good repute, has charitable status, and receives funding from “Ealing Council and the Ealing Primary Care Trust. [They] also receive project funding from the Big Lottery Fund, in addition to funding from smaller trusts.”

The landlords of the Green Man Lane venue are: from the contact details it would appear to be Ealing Council (we will amend accordingly if we discover otherwise)

Postal address: Green Man Lane Community Centre, Green Man Lane, West Ealing WI3 OSN

Telephone contact: 0208 825 5086

Email contact: khansa@ealing.gov.uk

There are further measures that may be employed and we will indicate these if events should demonstrate that they are necessary.

If AA members act singly and collectively via their groups (and Intergroup) this problem can easily be resolved – the choice is yours!

Over to you

Cheers

And so we return to Happy Clappy Land – The Heart of Darkness

In our previous piece (somewhat ironic) we focussed our attention rather on the bizarre nature of this particular conclave. Now we come to the seamier and more sinister side of events currently unfolding in Happy Clappy Land (aka Ealing - West London), these conducted under the direction of its very own “Pied Piper” (aka Happy Dennis), a fellow who seems determined to break the record for launching as many meetings as possible (and in the shortest space of time) in order to spread the “word”. Of course we might commend his efforts if “the word” happened to coincide in some way with the AA message, but unfortunately the antecedents of this particular version derive rather from cult sources than anything to do with Alcoholics Anonymous. Like so many other cult groups (Design for Living - Wimbledon/Newbury, Road to Recovery - Plymouth, Dallas Primary Purpose and other so-called Back to Basics inventions etc) it has produced its very own literature including a booklet which contains large numbers of quotes from the Big Book. Whole sections of this publication have been lifted from the original and transplanted into the 'revised' version, and to such an extent that we believe that this would constitute a breach of copyright if derived from any other edition of the book “Alcoholics Anonymous” than the first. Moreover reference is made in this tome to a website set up by David “The Icon” C, (a former sponsee of David B, the initiator of the whole Road to Recovery movement and its various incarnations). Dennis himself is a sponsee of the aforementioned “Icon” and thus the lineage - and the corruption it propagates – proceeds; but we will come back to this a little later. As is customary the usual misquotes are included within the “Preface” to the “Little Yellow Book” (as we shall refer to it), and most specifically with regard to AA recovery rates. However this is only to be expected because the misrepresentation itself serves largely as the basis for the whole cult movement, and thereafter supports its fabricated claims to present the 'true' and 'unsullied' version of both the programme and fellowship of AA. With much wringing of hands, gnashing of teeth, rending of clothes and other dramatic expressions of doom the cult have prophesied the imminent demise of AA for a number of years now, the end being declared well and truly “nigh” repeatedly, and for a variety of reasons (including the above). These include the unwelcome intrusion of “treatment centre” referrals (who apparently have been responsible for turning AA meetings into “therapy groups” - who would think it!), addicts who are not “true” or “real” alcoholics ie. drunks who turn out not to be “proper” drunks (according to the self-appointed committee who decide on these matters), those who fail to shape their recovery according to Oxford Groups' principles (the Four Absolutes, praying etc (on knees – and using Christian prayers), and finally a widespread unwillingness to “behave” just like they did in the good old days when alcoholics were alcoholics and all was right with the world! Unfortunately for these prophets of doom AA has not only failed to collapse under the weight of this mass of apostasy but has instead thrived, sustaining its initial – and documented - recovery rates (see here for article), and has become even more inclusive and liberal than ever before, largely abandoning moreover the ill-judged experiments of the past. Our predecessors may well be excused some of their excesses on the grounds that they were the pioneers, and trod an unknown territory (at this stage our own traditions had not been formulated as a response to these early 'failed experiments'). However, as AA itself has evolved and flourished, the programme (as outlined in the Big Book) remains the same as when it was first formulated (presented in the 1st edition with prior drafts being abandoned, these being adjudged (quite rightly) as either inaccurate and/or unsuited to our purpose). However the cult can offer no such plea of mitigation for their obscene conduct, and moreover their obtuse insistence that AA should return to this supposed “golden age” - and thereby repeat the same mistakes - can only be regarded as a form of madness (remember that old definition of insanity!) derived mainly from the corruption laying deeply embedded within their own twisted psyches (or untreated alcoholism as it is termed within our society). Certainly when you come to examine the "make-up" of a lot of their 'leaders” it quickly becomes evident that these are badly damaged individuals who remain quite unwilling to attend to their own deficiencies, and would much rather focus on the supposed defects of others (hence the general tendency towards 'control freakery' within their sponsorship system - or as we term it “sponsorship idolatry”). This brings us back to our original theme: Happy Dennis and his perhaps not-so-happy cohorts. We have received reports that an “anti-medication” policy has been adopted by this group. We quote: “ [they] may as well drink again than take anti-depressants". This, of course, is the kind of irresponsible advice that has already led to a number of AA members being hospitalised (and in some instances committing suicide), and is completely contrary to the guidelines circulated so widely within our fellowship. We have also been informed that the now quite infamous and appalling guidance in relation to Step Four has been circulating within the Ealing meetings. Again we quote: “In the inventory we should be prepared to include sex with: men, women, children, animals.... and bottles. Sometimes the exact nature of the sexual act (particular positions indulged in, for example) should go down if the motive in indulging in it is primarily selfish gratification rather than an expression of love.” This section can really only be described as a voyeur's charter (with paedophile tendencies!) and is indeed a complete perversion of the AA message, and then at every level! The website which used to carry this information (now deleted) was produced by David “The Icon” C, and is alluded to in the aforementioned cult literature. Moreover it has been suggested that the initial financing of the Ealing groups derives mainly from one source – Happy Dennis himself – remember - he who pays the piper calls the tune! Finally “The Little Yellow Book” contains a listing of his meetings (contrary to the wishes of the local intergroup) and is clearly intended to promote his, and only his interests. All of these events seem to be centred around premises located at Bayham Rd (the same address as for the Ealing Centre for Independent Living, 1 Bayham Road, West Ealing, W13 0TQ]. We wonder if they know about any of this?

Cheers

Tales from Happy Clappy Land

Once upon a time in a galaxy far far away.......... or maybe closer to home …. how about Ealing? Yes. Ealing will do nicely!

[We want to emphasise here that the following account is entirely fictional, and any resemblance whatsoever to individuals alive or dead is purely coincidental. Ealing itself is an entirely fabricated and imaginary place and not to be found on any map. Now where we were? Ah yes! Happy Clappy Land]

Once upon a time in …. Ealing.... a strange and wondrous place indeed, one full of dark mysteries, and then of darker deeds (and with lots of pubs as well) there lived a fellow who was full of woe (and other things as well), and who really didn't have a clue. But one day Dennis (for this was the blessed one's name), and as he trudged the streets of darkest Ealing, found a great light shining down upon him and suddenly he was quite sure that he knew it all! So excited was Dennis that he was inspired to spread the word (or in his case a lot of words!) to anyone who was prepared to listen (and even if they were not). So HAPPY was Happy Dennis (for this was now indeed his given name) that he jumped for joy at this revelation and ran through the town laughing like a maniac (or so those poor, benighted and unenlightened fools all about him assumed, but then after all what did they know!). But what to do next, and how might he spread his gospel of bliss, and for the briefest moment Happy Dennis was all of a dither! But then again the light descended, and now once more his path grew clear. He would start a meeting, and then another, and this until Ealing was quite overfull, and even bursting at the seams, and there within these blessed assemblies he would spread the blessed word, and this forever, and then to all and sundry. And now he hunted high and hunted low until he found finally his HAPPY sanctuary (for the gods in their wisdom - or perhaps stupidity - had guided him at last to that HAPPY place). Now Dennis sent word to every quarter, and so his flock gathered all about him, and they did come from far and wide (even from Southall and Hayes - or so we're told) and to whom Dennis passed on his ecstatic word. But Dennis was so HAPPY now , and getting HAPPIER by the minute, and indeed so happy was HAPPY Dennis that he could barely contain his joy at all and felt obliged to jump in the air on account of this, and even as he did so - oh what bliss! - for so did everyone else jump all about him! The meetings spread from one to two, and then to four, and then to even more, and before long the entire town was full of meetings with not even room for one more Tescos! And to these happy gatherings he gave special names, one was called Healthy, another Radiant, another Growing (and Glowing) and even another named Wonderful until finally he had run out of slogans and decided to call the last one just plain old “Sponsored Walks"! By this time HAPPY Dennis was so uplifted he could no longer stay indoors and he decided to take the meeting out of doors, and so he led forth his flock into the sunlight and there they followed him all humble and meek. First he would go to the right, and then to the left and sometimes he would just stop right there in the middle of the street, and at each and every move so would his flock follow his lead, and thus they would all proceed, and in one great, big, happy company! And finally when the day was done they would stand in a circle everyone, with each one holding the other's hands, to recite their prayers all most humbly. Then, and at HAPPY Dennis' signal, they would with one accord bound forth into the air and JUMP FOR JOY for they were all in HAPPY CLAPPY LAND!!!

You couldn't make it up could you? Ooops! We just did – didn't we?

More seriously a number of members have commented that the (relatively sane) practice of holding hands at the end of meetings to say the Serenity Prayer (together with various chanted add-ons) is in itself a form of “emotional coercion”. It is quite difficult for those who do not wish to participate to do so without causing some degree of disruption to the meeting (something that does not occur for example if you don't want to recite the Serenity prayer). More importantly some regard should be had for the newcomer in this instance. They really may not want to hold hands and yet here they are given very little real choice. We believe that it should be made clear at the beginning of the meeting (or just before the end) that no one is obliged to participate in such activities if they do not wish, or better still, that such rituals are entirely dispensed with. They do after all come across as rather childish and perhaps even a little HAPPY CLAPPY. For our part the aacultwatch team has voted (unanimously), and consistent with our anti-abuse and anti-coercion stance, no longer to join in these rituals (and this including, most emphatically, jumping in the air!)

Cheers
