“It
is possible for us to grow or not to grow, as we elect. If we fight
shy of entangling alliances, if we avoid getting messed up with
controversial issues (religious or political, wet or dry), if we
maintain our unity through our central offices, if we preserve the
simplicity of our program, if we remember that our job is to get
sober and to stay sober and to help our less fortunate brother to do
the same thing, then we shall continue to thrive and prosper.” -
Dr. Bob, Detroit 1948. (Dr. Bob and the Good Old Timers page 288)
"We
are not allied with any particular faith, sect or denomination, nor
do we oppose anyone. We simply wish to be helpful to those who are
afflicted." - Alcoholics Anonymous; 1939. (Foreword to the First
edition "Big Book," "Alcoholics Anonymous.")
Medication
prescribed by A.A. Co-founder, Akron City Hospital 1935:
“Hospitalisation
was another must in those early days.” (Dr. Bob and the Good Old
Timers page 102)
“The
offbeat patient did just as Dr. Bob predicted. He started to yell for
a drink in a very short time. He got the paraldehyde and whiskey,
then curled up on the floor, started to snore, and was incontinent of
bladder. Three hours later the procedure was repeated, and just
before I went off duty I looked in on him. He had somehow gotten into
bed but waved me away, saying ‘I’m not gonna drink any more of
that dammed white stuff!” – Betty B. Nurse, Akron City Hospital,
1935. (Dr. Bob and the Good Old Timers page 103,104)
“You
see, back in those days, we were groping in the dark,” Dr. Bob
said. “We knew practically nothing of alcoholism.” (Dr. Bob and
the Good Old Timers page 104)
“Medical
textbooks weren’t very helpful, either, Bob said. ‘Usually, the
information consisted of some queer treatment for D.T.’s, if a
patient had gone that far. If he hadn’t you prescribed a few
bromides and gave the fellow a good lecture.” (Dr. Bob and the Good
Old Timers page 105)
“Commenting
on their own sauerkraut-tomatoes-and-syrup ‘treatment’ Dr. Bob
said, ‘Of course, we discovered later that dietary restrictions had
little to do with maintaining sobriety.” (Dr. Bob and the Good Old
Timers page 105)
“I
can see Doc now with the tomatoes, sauerkraut, a can of Karo syrup,
and a big spoon,’ he said while reminiscing with Bill Wilson. ‘The
men got to where it almost gagged them, taking it straight. He did
back down on the sauerkraut, but kept up the tomatoes and corn syrup
for years.” – Ernie G. (Dr. Bob and the Good Old Timers page 105)
1939:
“Al
[sometimes known as ‘Abbey’] G – was in Akron City Hospital all
smoked up with paraldehyde and all the other things Doc gave them.”
- Clarence S. (Dr. Bob and the Good Old Timers page 164)”
Comment:
Anyone for sauerkraut! Something to be grateful for perhaps! But
maybe the cult might like to add this one to their ever growing list
of “suggestions"? Should go down like a ..... lead balloon!
