Drug (and alcohol) courts – New Jersey

The mission of drug courts is to stop the abuse of alcohol and other drugs and related criminal activity. Drug courts are a highly specialized team process within the existing Superior Court structure that addresses nonviolent drug-related cases. They are unique in the criminal justice environment because they build a close collaborative relationship between criminal justice and drug treatment professionals. “

"Intoxicated Driver Program (IDP)

Any person convicted of an alcohol related traffic offense must participate in a program at an Intoxicated Driving Resource Center (IDRC):
  • New Jersey has an IDRC in each county for first and third-time offenders and three regional centers for second-time offenders
  • During the program, offenders attend mandatory Alcohol and Highway Safety Education courses
  • IDRC also evaluates each offender for an alcohol or drug problem and determines the need for treatment
  • If treatment is needed, the offende must complete a 16-week minimum treatment
  • IDRC monitors compliance and reports noncompliance to the courts and IDP. IDP makes recommendation to the MVC for suspension or restoration based on the offender’s successful completion of conviction requirements.
Satisfactory participation in IDRC is a step toward restoring your license. Failure to comply will result in further license suspension and possible jail time.”

Division of Addiction Services (New Jersey)

Through a partnership between the Division of Addiction Services (DAS), Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC), and the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC), the Intoxicated Driving Program (IDP) coordinates all services for driving under the influence (DUI) clients statewide.  The IDP office also manages the county and regional Intoxicated Driver Resource Centers (IDRC). IDP coordinates the client’s participation in county level education, screening and referrals completed at the county Intoxicated Drivers Resource Centers. Treatment is made available through the use of the Driving Under the Influence Initiative (DUII) fund for financially indigent New Jersey residents meeting certain requirements. The overall mission of the New Jersey Intoxicated Driving Program (IDP) is to make our highways and waterways safe for the Garden State by preventing DUI recidivism.”
