We quote:
“…......
Sad news in America. The family of the woman who was murdered by her
court mandated boyfriend has filed a wrongful death lawsuit. Her case
was the inspiration for the documentary "The Thirteenth
Step". I don't know how much you know about our legal system but
a civil case which this one would be, the burden of proof is a much
lower level than in a criminal case. Civil Cases you only have to
reach a level of the preponderance of evidence.
While
investigating why AA World Service and New York GSO do not consider
our involvement with the courts to have reached the level of
Affiliation, I came across the press release that I have attached. It details a the election of a
former Sobriety Court Judge to the Board of Trustees. So much for
non-affiliation.
If AA
chooses to attempt to defend itself by saying it has nothing to do
with the courts sending parties to the meetings and the plaintiffs
are aware of this Trustee it will not look good in court.
The latest
spin in the AA and legal communities is that AA participation is
"Court Offered" not "Court Ordered" mean while
the Detractors of AA continue to refer to it as "Coerced
Participation" the latter seems more accurate to me.
I believe
the Documentary will be coming out soon which will be another load of
negative press directly attributable to the Affiliation with the
Courts issue. Here's a link of the documentary. I'll forward an email
I received from the producer. It has a past Trustee in it and its not
flattering to AA in the least.
