A Study of the Process of Affiliation with Alcoholics Anonymous

Extract:

Comment: So it would seem that contrary to cult ethos 'image is not all'. According to this study the potential for newcomers to “affiliate” or join AA is much enhanced if they have a prior favourable impression of AA members including their “sincerity” (or absence of hypocrisy), and particularly those “who quietly and without fanfare live up to the principles of the group”. Apparently circuit speakers, 'gurus' and sundry Big Book 'experts' are not 'essentials' to recovery after all!
