“Cultic
or ideologically extremist groups are controlled by a leader
who is both charismatic and authoritarian. Both charisma and
authoritarianism (or bullying) are required as they are the source of
the group's central organizing dynamic of "love" and fear.
For example, this is how a former member of the Newman Tendency
described its leader: I liked him! I would have a problem disliking
him now, even after what I already know about him. If he sat down
right there next to me, I'd say, 'Hey Fred, how are you doing? Are
you still corrupting people?”
