“Nothing is more certain about AA than the principle of the individual's freedom to practice the religion of his own choice. Our Tradition merely requests AA members not to link the AA name with other activities”.
“So
the principle has evolved that AA is prepared to give all that it has
– all, save its own name”.
Comment:
Those groups who continue to employ the Lord's Prayer in their
meetings would do well to heed the above advice. Their employment of
this strictly Christian prayer clearly affiliates these groups with
that movement and in effect renders them non-AA entities. It would
appear, however, that the Calyx Society elected to follow the above
advice although in our view it rather overplays its perceived
connection with AA (whereas according to AA's traditions, and from
the fellowship's side, no such affiliation exists). Unfortunately,
and in common with most organised religions, the Calyx Society
suffers from that usual misconception ie. that the more efficacious
route to God (or Higher Power, Greater Power, Enlightenment etc) lies
with their particular 'brand', a perspective which happily is proving
to be less and less appealing as time goes by. Each man and woman
must find their own path through life (and death) albeit these ways
may sometimes appear to proceed in concert for a short span.
“Religion” is for the group whilst the 'spiritual' path (in its
broadest sense) is for the true individual.
